We’re less than a week out from Maker Faire Bay Area, and things are really gearing up for a fantastic weekend. As a special countdown to Maker Faire, we’ll be profiling some of the awesome folks who will be at Bazaar Bizarre at Maker Faire. Even if you aren’t able to be at Maker Faire, you don’t want to miss out on the work of these fantastic vendors. Today we introduce you to The Bare Tree.
Tell us about what you’ll be showcasing at Maker Faire/Bazaar Bizarre:
My name is Saul, and I run a small indie clothing and accessory business called The Bare Tree. The Bare Tree specializes in sweatshop free, eco-friendly and socially responsible apparel. I personally draw my designs and screen print each garment by hand. In addition to my current offerings, at this years Bazaar Bizarre @ Maker Faire I will be showing a number of new shirt designs, new scarves and my awesome belt buckles which were recently featured on BoingBoing.net. (BSOD, and PONG belts)
How did you get started hand crafting your goods?
I was first introduced to screen printing while in high school, but my creative journey soon diverged to other mediums and screen printing became just an occasional hobby. Jump forward to about three years ago, I was unable to find comfortable and unique t-shirts that were affordable. Being a compulsory DIY-er I decided to print a handful of shirts just for myself, friends quickly started requesting shirts and The Bare Tree was born. I now print; shirts, hoodies, scarves, messenger bags, underwear, hats, onesies, and make military style web belts.
What are your main sources of inspiration?
My main source for inspiration is probably just always trying to entertain myself and the people around me. If you look through my collection you will see references to television, film, music and new media. I love making a design that comes from some aspect of my life, because when it makes a customer smile or they buy the piece it is like they are saying “Saul, i see where you are coming from, and I think it is pretty rad.” which is like being hugged by awesome, and makes me want to create new items people can continue to enjoy. I’m also inspired by not taking myself too seriously.
What new idea (in or outside of your field) has excited you most recently?
One word: Hooverboard.
What is your motto?
Live forever, or die trying.
