We’re only a few weeks out from Maker Faire Bay Area, and things are really gearing up for a fantastic weekend. As a special countdown to Maker Faire, we’ll be profiling some of the awesome folks who will be at Bazaar Bizarre at Maker Faire. Even if you aren’t able to be at Maker Faire, you don’t want to miss out on the work of these fantastic vendors. Today we introduce you to Erika Kern of My Imaginary Boyfriend.

Tell us about what you’ll be showcasing at Maker Faire/Bazaar Bizarre:
Well, there are the log pillows and kits that I’m most known for but I’m also working on some new designs incorporating vintage fabrics and hand embroidery.  There are also some new monsters based on some ornaments I made this past Christmas.

How did you get started hand crafting your goods?
I’ve been a crafter for as long as I can remember but I didn’t start selling until 2005.  I was living in New York doing a lot of theater and improv comedy when I decided I needed a break.  This break left me with a lot of extra time on my hands so I started making more and more things.  Then Bust Magazine announced their first Craftacular and I applied on a lark and got in!  Then I realized, oh God, I have to make enough to sell (gulp). But all went well, and I’ve not looked back.

What are your main sources of inspiration?
Nature, vintage magazines and books, childhood memories, old movies, the flotsam and jetsam I find while thrifting, vintage illustrations, traditional embroidery and crafting techniques.
What new idea (in or outside of your field) has excited you most recently?
Glow-in-the-dark glitter.  I know it sounds trivial (and, well, it is) and I’m not really a glitter person, but man, I saw this in the craft store and it just made me so happy.  I mean, the world can’t be that bad if there’s glow-in-the-dark glitter in it.

What is your motto?
I wonder what that would look like made of felt?
