We’re just more than a week out from Maker Faire Bay Area, and things are really gearing up for a fantastic weekend. As a special countdown to Maker Faire, we’ll be profiling some of the awesome folks who will be at Bazaar Bizarre at Maker Faire. Even if you aren’t able to be at Maker Faire, you don’t want to miss out on the work of these fantastic vendors. Today we introduce you to Bug Under Glass.
Tell us about what you’ll be showcasing at Maker Faire/Bazaar Bizarre:
I will be selling museum quality insect display showcasing the beautiful miniature world that lives all around us, but is seldom noticed.
How did you get started hand crafting your goods?
About 9 years ago a friend offered me a small space in her booth. When I sold everything I was hooked! What started off as a hobby has now turned into a 14 hour a day business.
What are your main sources of inspiration?
Walking in the woods. Well, I don’t do much walking as I am always turning over rocks and logs to see what lives beneath. When you first turn over these things its like looking into another world.
What new idea (in or outside of your field) has excited you most recently?
Auto montage, which is macro photography from a microscope. Unlike a traditional scanning electron scope, these pictures are in color and the resolution is amazing. With this you can really see the architecture of insects. You can witness auto montage on ants at www.antweb.org.
What is your motto?
Do what you love and the money will follow. I don’t think bugs will make me a millionaire but at least I am following my passion and making a living off of it.
