Build A Connected Device, Win A Trip To Space!

The folks at are really going out of this world with their latest contest. The first place prize is literally a trip to space.

They’re looking for cool projects involving connected electronics. That may sound vague, but they say that they don’t want to limit people too much by imposing rules. The most important parts are that you actually build something and that you document it extremely clearly.

They’ve got an all star cast of judges including:

  • Andrew “Bunnie” Huang, Ronin
  • Jack Ganssle, The Ganssle Group
  • Joe Grand, Grand Idea Studios
  • Sprite TM, Sprites Mods
  • Limor “LadyAda” Fried, Adafruit
  • Dave Jones, EEVblog
  • Elecia White, Logical Elegance
  • Ian Lasnet, Dangerous Prototypes

Open Source is extremely high priority:

The Hackaday community stands for the free and open exchange of ideas and information. By embracing open design you can make sure that we don’t keep re-inventing the wheel. It allows others to leap past the common speed bumps, and lets those just honing their design skills learn from your successes. As you design your hardware, document the process. You won’t be disqualified for keeping the secret sauce a secret, but you will be judged based on your efforts to share and make your work accessible for all. In other words: we want to reward Open Hardware and Open Source Software.

As I said above, the first place prize is a trip to space on the carrier of your choice($250,000 value), or $196,418 cash option. There are other cool prizes for runners up too, including group skydiving, 3d printers, CNC mills, and a trip to Japan. Anyone over the age of 12 can enter, but you’ll have to get your entry in before June 28, 2014. You can read more about the On the official page here.

Senior Editor for Make: I get ridiculously excited seeing people make things. I just want to revel in the creativity of the masses! My favorite thing in the world is sharing the hard work of a maker.

I'd always love to hear about what you're making, so send me an email any time at
