David Lang’s TED Talk: My Underwater Robot

[ted id=1885]

So awesome to see another maker on TED. Zero to Maker author David Lang explains the origins of the OpenROV project, which created an open-source DIY submersible, in essence a tethered underwater drone that you can build yourself from a kit. Lang and his collaborator Eric Stackpole built the OpenROV collaboratively with an online community of folks interested in the same things. After a New York Times article created a buzz, Eric and David Kickstarted a kit-making business–only to be faced with the realities of learning how to make a kit. It’s an excellent talk and David does a great job. If you want to learn more, be sure to check out MAKE: Volume 34 which features an OpenROV cover story.

Finally, if you haven’t read David’s recent post here on MAKE, Citizen Exploration, an Amateur Revolution, drop everything and go check it out.
