I’m ordering a GloFish soon. GloFish are fluorescent zebra fish that were originally bred to detect pollution in the water. If the fish is glowing, then there’s bad stuff in the water. Recently, these have gone on sale as pets. The “pet versions” will just glow all the time. There has been a bit of a debate over these little guys, right now you can’t own, transport or sell them in California. Before my new glowing friend gets here I want to build an aquarium for him. For daytime viewing, a fluorescent or halogen light and for night time viewing a black light. The fish absorb light and re-emit light, apparently it’s quite striking to see it in person. Web cam, web controlled lights, and web viewable stats on the tank is what I have planned too. I’m currently checking out King Vinnie’s DIY aquarium site– if there are any others let me know.

“Right now you can’t own, transport or sell them in California”. Meybe, stop and think, there might be a reason for that.

Maybe their worried that your going to use your solar panel outside during the day and then put it in front of the glo-fish during the night :O)
One, I don’t support the release of genetically engineered organisms into the environment. Two, I’m tired of this veneration of cuteness, and I’d hoped not to see it at Make. Build yourself a remote-controlled aquarium webcam using a junked Laserjet and $25 in dimes? – sounds fabulous. Buy Cute Dayglo Genetically Engineered Fish? -no thanks.
I share some of the same environmental concerns. However in this case, on the About GloFish page of glofish.com, this seems to be satisfactory (especially considering they’ve been selling as aquarium fish for fifty years already!):

You can’t own a ferret in CA either, havn’t seen them take over the world yet.
Glad to hear that MAKE is looking into all kinds of different stuff. Don’t let the radical vocal few push the agenda for the majority.
