We’re having loads of fun dreaming up creative ways that Maker Media can use Twitter (like our new daily Make_Tips and Craft_Tips features). We want to grow our Twitter network. And we want YOU to sign up. So, here’s the deal. We’re calling this month “Book-a-Day in May.” We’ll be giving away a Maker’s Notebook every weekday to one of our randomly-selected followers on Twitter. At the end of the week, we’re also going to be giving away an Arduino MEGA to a randomly-selected Twitter-person. So start following us @Make to be eligible. We’ll announce the first week’s winners on Monday, May 11th.

In the interest of constructive criticism:
When Make: first started posting on Twitter, I jumped on that. ‘Cause what fan of Make: wouldn’t want to do that?!
Sadly, though, I had to stop. The Make: Twitter feed consisted (and still does, as far as I can tell) of nothing more than an endless succession of links back to the blog. I already read the blog a minimum of once a day, so it really didn’t add anything useful to me, and kept bumping all my friends’ tweets off the page.
Know what I’d love to see? Something a little more personal. Tell us about day-to day happenings around the office, or interesting or funny anecdotes from behind the scenes of Makerfaire or running the blog or publishing the magazine. Something that adds content I can’t get anywhere else.
I absolutely love Make: and the store and the Faire and all the side projects. I hope y’all find this helpful.

Thanks for the feedback, Fred. Much appreciated. We plan to add exactly the sort of content you’re talking about. We hadn’t planned on killing the auto-posting, but maybe we’ll consider that. It was something we started doing when we first set ourselves up on Twitter and it was new medium. It was a way for MAKE to reach a new audience.
Maybe it’s time we considered more of a curated queue of Make: Online content on Twitter, not just the auto-feed. We’ll explore that. In the meantime, we will be adding original Maker Media news, links, content, RTs of MAKE editors, authors, and readers, etc.
I was all set to sign up – not just for the notebook, but for cool content – but I already have an RSS feed reader. I don’t need to replicate that in my twitter stream.
Yeah, I was also about to de-follow Make because of all the posts. But it seems like the posting frequency has (understandably) lowered as Maker Faire approaches. I may need to give the Make: Twitter the axe when you guys don’t have as much to do.
I was real excited to see Make get on twitter, but quickly realized it was just a bot. I’ve always hoped to see someone use it appropriately, but the way it currently is just clutters my twitter feed.
Okay folks, we’ve talked it over internally and we’re going to kill the RSS -> Twitter feed and start publishing “original content” on MAKE Twitter. We’ll still do links to select articles on Make: Online, but also links to other MAKE/DIY happenings online, things going on at Maker Media, special (exclusive Twitter) deals in the Maker Shed, RTs from MAKE editors, authors, and makers we follow, etc.
So thanks for the feedback, we listened, and we’ll be starting with the new MAKE Twitter offerings in the next few days.
