For all of you that dig and dugg this story, note that the list at Lyngsat posted is the complete list of MPEG2 DVB channels. You’re not going to be able to watch many of them because of their orbital slots in space or their encryption…
When you see Digicipher 2, that’s the commercial encryption that keeps you out and lets the cable operators in.
For the most bang for the buck, The old Telstar-5, or IA5 has the most clear channels which Internationals in America tend to enjoy. http://www.lyngsat.com/ia5.html It’s right in the middle of the visible portion of the Clarke belt for the USA, so everyone can see it in America.
Pick up the Spring 06 Make Zine where I give you the details on how to set this up. It’s interesting and cool to play with. As far as channels and content goes, a DirecTV it is not.
For a good list of tunable channels, check out http://www.ftalist.com or http://www.espee.net/live/ if you are a cowboy and want the wild feeds that you can miss if you blink.
FTA is great. There are many vendors out there selling the equipment extremely cheap like aeon satellite
