IKEA guitar

IKEA guitar

Zachary made a guitar from a $15 IKEA table –

This is one of the most interesting guitars I ever built and it is also one of the best.

The action is great, the tone is unbelievable, the neck is super fast, tuning stability is as good as it gets. In short, everything just worked out great on this guitar. This amazingly figured top is from Ikea Furnishings. I bought one of their unfinished end tables for $15 and I can get three guitar tops from it. What a shame that they would use such amazing “tone-wood” for their cheap furniture. Its a sacrilege.

I introduce several new things in this guitar. I use DiMarzio Virtual P90 pickups for the first time and I love them. They are powerful and have a lot of guts. Its some kind of a midrange tone which screams Texas blues and Billy Gibbons.

Sweeeeet, wish he had pics of the steps he took to build it.

That Z2 on his site looks sick!

A write up on how he built them would be really interesting.

There was a guy from CF martin on RTE radio here in Ireland bemoaning the use of very large sitka spruce for tables, general lumber and what not when they could be used to make their guitars. Sounds like some of it goes to ikea!!

It’s an electric guitar. Not an acoustic. The body could be made from a dead cat. Long as the neck, and pickups are top notch, it really doesn’t matter that it’s (the body) made from an ikea table.

Yep, it doesn’t matter what the wood is made of since it is an electric. According to the link it is made of pine! Try using pine with an acoustic.

Physics tells me the wood/surface will have some effect on the vibrating string (reflection, absorbtion, etc.), and therefor the sound. Whether or not you notice it at all or see it as an improvement is not for me to decide.

Tercero, you obviously don’t play guitar. the material a guitar is made of makes a HUGE difference. so much so that you can tell the shape and wood of a guitar by listening to it, despite identical pickups and necks.
