Campmor has been selling kits that let you do this for a while now.
Resistor?
This mod is several years old. Posters on CandlePowerForums have done this and much more. Cutting edge hand-held lights from sratch as well as modding of existing lights. Lots of good information on lighting and electronics.

Too bad that 1 LED isn’t near as bright as the standard bulb sometimes.
I bought the ~$5 nite-eyez 3 LED replacement bulb and it’s great for a tool box flashlight or working on stage, much brighter and whiter than the standard bulb but you lose the ability to focus the beam.
Those that have never been to candlepowerforums from the other comment you should, I killed a good couple of days reading posts on that site, some amazing flashlight mods going on there.
@ patrickkeane:
Nope, I done this a few years ago with a green LED, with no resistors and it works great.

wont burn your face off? a mag 2xAA could never come close to warming my face.

If you simply replace it with a white LED, a 3v white LED is really dim, dimmer than the original bulb, but this can be done. You might be better off plugging in a red LED, which also needs 3v.
Typical white LEDs today require 4.5vdc, but the minimag supplies only 3v.
