MAKE @ Consumerist

MAKE @ Consumerist

Make Pt1088
We’re experimenting with some ads on sites that have a smart / maker / can-do / DIY spirit, so – we’re pleased to see our first test on Consumerist. As its name implies, the focus is on consumerism, and it deals with consumers’ experiences and issues with companies and corporations – many of the stories are about folks getting information and doing things themselves or “better”. A lot of “if can’t open it, you don’t own it” – it’s one of my favorite sites so if you like them too stop on over and subscribe to MAKE via the promo we’re running.

I am loving this DIY financial planning tool. I created a better plan than my financial planner gave me. I fired him. I’m done with paper financial plans.

About time that Consumerist got some potential ad’s. Gawker downsized them because who wants to advertise on a website that could have bad news about them? Lets just hope noone has a complain about Orielly or Make :O

@cde – thanks for the support!

here’s the thing, i’m ok if someone complains about MAKE or oreilly. we do our best and when problems or issues come up we take care of them right away – i think every business deals with things, it’s how you deal with them and how you treat your customers is what matters. i know we’re not perfect but i’m ok with any cheers or jeers as we get better and better over time.

Most Consumerist complaints happen after a round or two of contacting the company in question. I’m sure that Make would end up on one of the Best Company posts if there was a problem :P

But they can’t take it. As soon as you refuse to march in step with their anti-corporate attitude, they ban you from commenting.

I wear my Consumerist/Gawker Media ban with honor.

I am actually a bit surprised to see a fine company like O’Reilly partnering with Gawker. Gawker is the antithesis of O’Reilly, IMHO.

but it depends on the Gawker franchise. Consumerist has gone downhill ever since hiring comment nazi Roz, and Jezebel is, well, full of onesided Jezebels but Lifehacker (The required companion reading to Make, imho) and Io9 are great.

@DJFelix – first thanks for the kind words about MAKE/oreilly… as others have mentioned a site in the gawker network like i09, lifehacker, consumerist, etc doesn’t represent the entire network. i don’t agree with everything any blog network posts, but we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t *experiment* with an ad test on some sites. consumers is the first one, we’re also going to be running the same type of promotion on hackaday. whatever works we’ll do more of so we can continue to provide you and everyone else great content here. thanks for the feedback though, we’re always interested in what makers have to say.

as far as being banned from their site, you’re welcome here to post – just keep it constructive and civil and you’ll never get the ban-hammer from me :)

Hackaday? Now THAT’S more like it :) I love Hackaday, and can totally see the fit there. They’ve sent quite a bit of bandwidth your way over the years, and I’ve seen projects pop up on both sites. Great idea!

The only thing that has ever surprised me about Hackaday is that I’ve never seen them at Maker Faire. It’s totally off-topic, but Maker Faire Austin rocked this year IMHO.

  10. Phillip Torrone says:

@DJFelix – i founded hackaday a long time ago, so i like it too :)

hackaday was weblogsinc, then independent, now it’s part of mahalo. we’ve had them out to maker faire bay area and i’m sure they’ll be at the next one (or someone from their team).

thanks for the kind words about austin!!
