Make: videos now with transcripts and closed captions

Hey folks, we’ve wanted to do this for a long time and now it’s happening! Transcripts and closed captioning for our videos (YouTube). It will take some time to do all the videos but we’re going to experiment and see how it goes. The first one we did was “MAKE presents: the LED” – if you view it on YouTube you can click the little box in the lower right (CC) and see the captions. For straight up text, visit the video page on MAKE.

From – “MAKE presents: The LED” LEDs are in technology all around us, familiar and helpful for sure but you may wonder – Who invented them? How do I use one? Is it possible to make my own LED?!? Learn the answers to these baffling questions and more in… now with transcript and closed captioning on YouTube.

This isn’t free for us – we pay a service to help us with this, but we think it’s important to do – so if you’d like to support these types of efforts stop by the Maker Shed and pick up a kit – for this week we have a sale 10% off so you can save a few bucks too, use the code 2009OX on check out (it’s Chinese New Year!).

And it’s the LED video too! I wanted to watch that one before but no captions. It’s really sad that now with digital stuff it’s easier than ever to update videos and add Captions or even throw in some automatic voice recognition in there (better than nothing) but it doesn’t get done. Thanks for getting on it and starting to update your videos. Apple has an excellent CC setup with Quicktime and iPods/iPhones, but very few videos actually HAVE the CC in them. Great to see more and more CC showing up, it’s even useful for hearing folks as a friend of mine was trying to watch a movie on a laptop in the third-world… the fans and mosquitoes made it impossible to hear “Where’s the subtitles on this thing?”. Yeah welcome to MY world buddy. ;)

lol – glad you finally got a chance to take in the vid!

For a user-friendly captioning editor to expedite the process — and, perhaps, “crowd-source” it to fans?

That’s most excellent. My wife is deaf, and there are occasions where I’d like to show her some cool Web video. But a lot of times, without understanding the audio, it just doesn’t make sense to her. Captions make all the difference.

Thanks for your forward thinking. Naturally, I’d expect that from the MAKE: people…
