Presenter: Angela Sheehan
Project: Soundplushies: Making Noisy Puppets
Day/Time: Sunday at 2 PM
Tell us about what you’ll be demonstrating at the CRAFT booth at Maker Faire:
The last few months I have been playing around with noise-making puppets/plushies and I’m going to be bringing a few examples of my latest creations. My work usually centers around wearables with light or visual effects so this is a fun new direction for me. I’ll be showing how to make my ‘Talking’ Sock Puppet project and will have my Musical Drawdio Puppet to demonstrate. I am working on a brand new project this week involving a mini-theremin that I’m hoping to finish up in time to bring along to the faire.
How did you get started with crafting?
I’ve been crafting and sewing as long as I can remember, I think it started when I was about 5 and decided I wanted to make outfits for my huge My Little Pony collection. My journey into combining technology and crafts happened about 4 years ago in college when I first learned of Leah Buechley’s work in e-textiles – I was instantly hooked on the idea of wearables and have been fascinated by soft circuits ever since.
What are your main sources of inspiration?
Right now my main sources of inspiration are sea life and thrift store toys.
What new idea (in or outside of your field) has excited you most recently?
I think the idea of crowdfunding through sites like Kickstarter is one of the most exciting developments for the DIY and arts communities.
What is your motto?
“Live Free and DIY”
