Alan from Hackedgadgets alerted me to an ebay auction for a lot of old science and engineering magazines, there was a little time left and with my self-imposed budget of under $20 here’s the auction I won, $9.50! – Link.
The folks who sell them still have some auctions, so now that I picked up some please go get the rest :)

I found like 12 similar magazines at an auction in my area a few months ago. They have some really interesting projects in them. One actually had an article on building a boat from scratch!
Cool! Are you going to scan and share them now? :-)
sure! it’s just time that i need. if someone wants to help we can do that too.
philliptorrone: I find the easiest way to do it is with a digital SLR on a tripod, pointed straight down, you can remote-shutter from the computer, and you get a scanner-esque, high-res image
very cool find :)
I’ve already got my eye on a few :) To whomever wins…. do make scans (or photos :P) available to the community ;) I plan on doing the same.
I’ve got a lot of these stashed away. Maybe we need a masterlist of what’s already available online, to make this a community effort. I’d be happy to fill in a few issues, but I’m not about to do the whole pile.
…I still haven’t scanned the family pictures to share with all the relatives!
I’ve picked up a few small collections of these mags as well-working on renovating my 1950s-vintage house, I wanted to do some things “old school” to keep with the period of the home’s design-these magazines have lots of great period home improvement stuff in them. Plus reading old advertisments and automotive reviews is always cool.
I have a bunch of of popular electronics from the 60’s and 70’s. I wouldn’t mind sharing them online but does anyone know about the legalities? I don’t want to go to all that trouble and get a cease and desist order in a week.
Also, what’s a good format to make them available in? Acrobat seems to be out because I don’t have or plan to buy the full version. A series of images with links seems cumbersome.
As suburban says, the old ads are a great read. There’s some real gems of articles like before magnetic stripes were invented they talked about future credit cards storing the number and other info holographically.
oracle – i wouldn’t worry about a c&d. the best format (i think) is high res JPGs, folks can later make PDFs if they want.
cheers,
pt
Do you have them scanned yet? Please let me know, I have 2 friends that would like to get a copy of couple of them.
