Denney Cole, founder of TechShop Portland, wanted us to let all makers from Portland and surrounding areas know about the TechShop Portland Grand Opening, this Saturday, April 25, 2009, starting at 3:00 PM. You’ll have a chance to check out the cool tools and machines, talk with Denney, TechShop’s founder Jim Newton, and the Portland staff. Instructors will also be there to help you “Build Your Dreams.”

This event will be safe and fun for people of all ages, so feel free to bring family and friends.

I was EXTREMELY excited to see this post. I’d been anxiously awaiting the arrival of a place like this in Portland. Imagine my incredible disappointment when I discovered that TechShop Portland isn’t really in Portland, it’s in Beaverton (a suburb). Which is great if you live in the west-side suburbs (and drive a minivan, etc.). But I don’t, and I commute by bicycle, a trait many maker-types share. TechShop Portland is about 20 miles away from my front door by bicycle.

I’m typically not a person to whine about this kind of thing, but… why BEAVERTON? There are plenty of inexpensive properties in the industrial SE. Yeah, I know, I should be telling THEM that, but I doubt they’re gonna move after just establishing themselves… but I’m feeling pretty let down and had to bitch somewhere…
