Chris writes – “It will soon start raining here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I recently installed some [recycled] barrels to collect rain water for my gardening needs. Each barrel can hold 55 gallons of rain water. The rain water comes from one downspout, itself linked to a gutter that covers a 300 square feet roof section. Both barrels can be completely filled up when it only falls approx. 0.60 inches of rain. So here are my pictures so maybe you get inspired and install your own.” – Link.

Looks like my man bought a kit and did this, or got them preassembled. I started looking for parts to do something similar, and got a neat tip. If you’re looking for the drums, try to find a car wash in your area (’round these parts, it’s Auto Bell). I called AB up and got ahold of their warehouse people, and was told that yes, their windshield cleaner and soap come in big plastic drums.
They give the empties to their franchisees to use as waste cans, but said I could have as many as I wanted. I’m driving over tomorrow to get four so I can build my own system! The cleaning solvents are all lightweight and will wash right out.
