Single Speed Bike – Best of Weekend Projects

Another bit of archived awesomeness from the Weekend Project vault!

Make your bike into a single speed hipster bike! This week Dave Neff joins me to take some old broken bikes and mash them up into a new radical ride. Everbody’s experience will be different, but we rebuilt the bottom bracket, put new wheels on, chopped and flipped the handlebars, took off one of the front chain rings and put on a single speed bmx-style gear in the back. We did this because we made a bike out of parts found in the trash, but if you’ve got a working ten speed, you can just strip the derailleur, chop and flip the handlebars and switch out the back gears for a single speed freewheel gear.

Single speed bikes are great for folks who live in a moderately flat city. There are less parts to get stolen and less parts to break.

Instead of running “Best of Weekend Projects”, why don’t you open it up to makers to submit their own Weekend Project videos? Maybe make it a contest with nice prizes – though the exposure of their projects, along with showcasing their videographic and presentation skills to a wide audience, could be reward enough. Just a thought.

Where is the part that mentions that riding a single speed bike instantly identifies you as a douchebag?

I want new Weekend Projects! Where is Bre, anyways?

    Great stuff!

I really like the aspect of using discarded items to make a cool new doo-dad!

@cody – we’ll be doing something new soon.

Does this weekend project include other hipster trends? Like drinking papst or living off a trust fund?

Next week I am sure that Bre is going to prepare something BIG and NEW for us makers…

Robmora. It is about enjoying riding bikes, not what you are riding. Don’t ever get hung up on what other people think you should ride. There are a lot of serious single speed bikes out there now. Riding a single speed does not a douchebag make. Commenting on what bike one is riding makes the douchebag!

Do some normalizing on the sound of those clips. The music scares my neighbours…

Nice build, but the problem I usually have is that the chain has to be on just right!

Do you guys remember that chain tensioner some guy made out of a spoon a few months back? Pity his link is broken, it would’ve been useful.

Buying all the materials and tools make it as expensive as buying a new bike :(

What maintenance book is that? Anyone know of any good ones?
