Craig Smith, whose clever projects have been featured in MAKE and Make: Online a bunch of times (see links below) has written in again to share his excellent X-wing mailbox.
I made this so long ago, it is actually in need of weathering repairs and repainting. I never expected it to survive vandalism or theft for half a decade. But at five feet long and a five foot wingspan, theft would be quite difficult. Everybody from letter carriers to pizza delivery go out of their way to say how much they like it. There is a street about 10 miles away where older guys have a mailbox rivalry with custom car, firetruck and airplane mailboxes, I should mail them a photo.

No seriously, it has to be rather impressive to earn the respect from even the vandals. Nice work!
My R2 units are on the cover of MAKE: issue #2. Seriously, the 6″ R2 that goes with the 12″ scale figures is the perfect size. I was going to smear the 6″ figure with release agent, carefully make a silicone mold of the dome & shoulders, and pour a cast of it for the mailbox. But life gets busy…
But I totally want. Hmm… Maybe if I say it’s “sculpture”…
pretty awesome….
