Monica Resinger of Ruby Glen shows you how to take old T-shirts and use them to crochet yourself a round rag rug. You can also use this same pattern to make potholders or coasters. Link.

You can also make it just a straight carpet. And can add to them other shirts, stretch bedsheet, socks, anything that is equally stretchy and gets to the same strength. Here’s one made of mostly old Apple t-shirts.
When you have more than one kind of shirt and tones in it, it works best to make it a straight carpet. Use three colors or different yearn on a row, and change the start and end constantly to be random. That way no matter where your yarn starts or ends, it doesn’t look too odd. The round thing is harder to do if you try to keep the randomness pattern in it, unless you want to carry 2-3 yarns over while you crochet.

My grandmother made crocheted rag rugs over 50 years ago. She would use old dresses. To make the strips, she started at the bottom and cut round and round to create one continuous strip. She then crocheted these for throw rugs. She said this wasn’t for fun. It was necessary if you wanted a throw rug.
