Park tool (http://parktool.com) has much better instructions. For instance, they thought of including a magnet in the tool list to pick up bearings from within the shell.
This one doesn’t even use a chain whip to get the lockring off. Here’s a hint: if the cassette goes whirrr whirr while you’re trying to unscrew the lockring, that means you need to immobilize it, since it’s built to rotate freely in that direction. The chain whip is a piece of chain attached to a handle that acts like a strap wrench; with one hand on that wrapped around a cog, and one turning the lockring tool, one can get the cassette off.
There are a number of contraptions that recognize this fact. One can even use a ground-down lockring tool clamped in the dropouts and pedal the cassette free, from what I’ve heard. Pedro’s, IIRC, also makes a tool that induces torque between the lockring and the cassette directly, without the chain whip.
