Daniel Deutsch built this crazy-accurate replica of Luke Skywalker’s beat-up XP-34 landspeeder –
We built this fiberglass replica landspeeder from the ground up on a custom aluminum chassis. The electric drive system is capable of a top speed around 25 mph. The speeder is the same size as the original, and can travel several miles on a single battery charge.

Why do the shadows on Daniel Deutsch’s landspeeder look all funky? There is some sort of weird shadow haze around the left engine on the top picture and a bit of weirdness on the ground. In the lower photo, the direction of the shadows of the speeder don’t match the pickup on the road. I call fake on this!
It’s a ‘shop. I can tell by the pixels.
It looks like they didn’t even bother to adjust for lighting or have the image match the background when they dropped in the landspeeder image.
Looking at their webpage I can see the work that went into it. Aweeome. I still think the photos on makezine seem odd though. Perhaps it’s an artifact of image handling?

@all – At first the photos appeared doctored to me as well, perhaps touched up – but I have seen daylight + flash-fill create odd effects like this before.

First thing I thought when I saw those pics was something ain’t right. I think the reason they look fake is because a lot of the vehicles detail (including shadows) is actually painted on as apposed to being actual 3 dimensional features. This is probably what makes those photos looks so weird. The guy has a video of him and his kids driving down the street in the thing. So either he’s awesome at doing video effects and terrible at photoshop or that thing is the real deal. I say real deal.
Great job, I’m envious even though I hardly like Star Wars all that much.
Regarding the photographs, they don’t appear to be faked as opposed to a poor quality job of the focus composite technique (series of shots with different focus distance). This causes repeating instances of field depth which makes it look like a scale model enlarged into a background shot.
I think it’s funny that even though I have all the build photos and a video driving it, that some people still think the pictures are photoshop fakes. I simply used a fill-flash on a sunny Florida day on a matt subject. Notice the reflections on the windshield.

BTW, the video is shot at the same location (my front yard) as those photos were taken. No retouching was done to any photos other than cropping in “iPhoto” on my mac.
