This is interesting, Flatland, the story of a 3rd dimensional visitor to 2D space, is going to be a movie (DVD 2007)… the trailer is pretty good – Link.
“Flatland: The Movie is an animated film inspired by Edwin A. Abbott’s classic novel, Flatland.
Set in a world of only two dimensions inhabited by sentient geometrical shapes, the story follows Arthur Square and his ever-curious granddaughter Hex. When a mysterious visitor arrives from Spaceland, Arthur and Hex must come to terms with the truth of the third dimension, risking dire consequences from the evil Circles that have ruled Flatland for a thousand years.
The movie will be part of an educational DVD, which will include the original text from the Abbott’s book”

Nice… I like it already
Flatland isn’t true 2D, though – things slide around “on top” of other things, because the view is from “above”
The book “The Planiverse” by A.K. Dewdney creates a much more completely thought-through 2D universe. The Planiverse is even aimed at Makers – there are discussions of how to build 2D steam-engines, space-craft and clocks.
