Jean-Louis writes – “The Lifter works without moving parts, flies silently, uses only electrical energy and is able to lift its own weight plus an additional payload. The Lifter uses the Biefeld-Brown effect discovered by Thomas Townsend Brown in 1928. The basic design of the Lifter has been fully described in the Townsend Brown US Patent filed on Aug 16, 1960 and titled “Elektrokinetic Apparatus”, you will find in this patent the full description of the main principle used in the Lifter devices.” Thanks Sylvian! – Link.

The operating principle is that, in an assymmetrical capacitor, the capacitor ‘experiences a net force towards the smaller electrode’. Is this the principle behind electrostatic loudspeakers, and it not, has anyone tried this approach for audio applications?
No, this is NOT how ESLs work. See http://mark.rehorst.com or other sites for ESL info.
There is currently a thread at DIYaudio.com by someone who is trying to make a speaker that uses the “Biefield-Brown” effect.
These “lifters” are lifted by ionic wind- the same thing that moves air in those air ionizers that are so heavily advertised these days. There is NO reason to believe that there are any “anti-gravity” effects involved.
Yeah, lifters are just a reprise of the ionocraft from 1959. Also, when placed into a hard vacuum, they don’t work.
