David sent around this book Wholly Irresponsible Experiments to our team, I haven’t heard of this book (has anyone else?) – Here’s a review of it by Ian @ the Fortean Times –
Science can be looked at in two ways, I suppose: as a selfÂless quest for knowÂledge in the servÂice of human proÂgress; or as a really good excuse to blow shit up. This book sits firmly in the second camp, and as I make a living orgÂanÂisÂing this kind of stuff for public audiÂences at one of the UK’s hands-on science centres, it was inevÂitÂable that Wholly IrresponsÂible ExperiÂments would land in my in-tray.
So, is it any good, then? Well, yes, but not actuÂally wholly irresÂponsÂible. It comes with instÂructÂions that tell you to put the match out after lightÂing a candle and does not employ anyÂthing more esoÂteric than houseÂhold ingredÂients. It does not featÂure anyÂthing with a blast radius, or the potentÂial to be structÂurÂally damÂagÂing or a gross vioÂlatÂion of health and safety law.
