David sent around this book Wholly Irresponsible Experiments to our team, I haven’t heard of this book (has anyone else?) – Here’s a review of it by Ian @ the Fortean Times –
Science can be looked at in two ways, I suppose: as a selfรยญless quest for knowรยญledge in the servรยญice of human proรยญgress; or as a really good excuse to blow shit up. This book sits firmly in the second camp, and as I make a living orgรยญanรยญisรยญing this kind of stuff for public audiรยญences at one of the UK’s hands-on science centres, it was inevรยญitรยญable that Wholly Irresponsรยญible Experiรยญments would land in my in-tray.
So, is it any good, then? Well, yes, but not actuรยญally wholly irresรยญponsรยญible. It comes with instรยญructรยญions that tell you to put the match out after lightรยญing a candle and does not employ anyรยญthing more esoรยญteric than houseรยญhold ingredรยญients. It does not featรยญure anyรยญthing with a blast radius, or the potentรยญial to be structรยญurรยญally damรยญagรยญing or a gross vioรยญlatรยญion of health and safety law.
