If you spot interesting/useful thrown out stuff in the Bay area, send it on up to GarbageScout – “A found treasure map – a recycler’s dream, a cheapskate’s best friend, and a dumpster diver’s companion.
From your phone, email a picture of your find to “street@garbagescout.com”
In the body of the email type a description @ location.
For example: furniture old chairs@123 East Broadway
computer monitors look good @ west 79th street & broadway
bike wheels and parts @ 345 west 21st.

Nice! I remember hearing about the NYC version – great to know there is one in SF now.
This looks great. A related project would be to compile a list of components commonly found in junked equipment that are useful for other purposes, e.g., light sensors in electronic cameras, and motors in old Walkmen, both for use in robotics. Perhaps such a reference already exists?
http://www.MapJack.com has online map service and location finder in San Francisco showing street-level (street side) pictures of every city street and can search for businesses and actually see the front of the business.
