HOW TO – Run the OLPC (one laptop per child) on Windows

If you’re curious about what the OLPC (one laptop per child) is like, Tuttle SVC shows you how to emulate it on windows, thanks Brian!

  1. Download the VMware Player installer and run it;
  2. Download this file and unzip it somewhere handy;
  3. Navigate to the unzipped files and double click on the ‘olpc’ VMware Configuration File;
  4. Tell the player it is ok to change the system’s UUID and click through the error messages;
  5. You should have a fresh simulated XO laptop. Have fun messing with it.

    Shouldn’t it be “OLPC” not “OPLC”?

    If you can’t be bothered to install it, I’ve made a short video of it in action. The user interface is very unconventional.

    The video is available over on my blog:

    OK, my puny server seems to be giving out under the bandwidth of hosting the drive image. I’m setting up some help with hosting. In the meantime, I guess I’ll learn how to run a bittorrent tracker…

  4. philliptorrone says:

    tom, we can host at make, email me.

  5. tom.hoffman says:

    OK, try this mirror for the OLPC drive image.

    neither the main link or the mirror for tom.hoffman works. Is there an alternate location?
