I think if companies like Google, Dell, HP, etc. got behind this and helped provide some funding to spread the word and maybe funded some full-time ‘seeders’ to add to the database, it could have a reasonable chance of success and life.
I highly doubt that we can rely on companies for help. Take mobile phone manufacturers as a great example. They are running out of number combinations to name their products, yet they still refuse to make new software updates available on hardware that is more than 6 months old.
