I used to work for the largest manufacturer of residential garage door openers in the world, and this was an idea that we had to continusously tell engineering ‘no we can’t do that’. Personally I don’t think it’s that bad of an idea (assuming no kids or pets around), but the laws are set up to ban any device that allows a GDO to close while the user is not in (personally live) line of sight with the door. We considered using web cams and having the operator work over the web, but the lawyers said no.
The other idea we always said ‘no’ to was to have the operator open automatically when the Carbon Monoxide level became dangerous. Again, it was too much of a liability should it not perform. Stupid Lawyers!
What’s the big deal here? The invention that made this happen is not the iPhone…it’s the X10 which has been around for years.
garage doors
are part and parcel of the houses that have little outdoor space and a car or any other transport to keep in.
You can get a bluetooth one at http://www.cellphonegaragedooropener.com it hooks up in about 5min and works with any cellphone including iphone and blackberry. I got one and it rocks! No more keys or dumb garage clickers that can be taken from your vehicle. http://www.cellphonegaragedooropener.com/ no hacks required, no codes to write, just hook up the wires on it and go. Really really easy!
