Rigid chips

Rigid Chips is almost like a virtual set of legos, except you have parts like V8 engines, rocket thrusters, laser ring gyroscopes, and guns. You can also add scripting to your models so you can make things like segways and autonomous vehicles. If your really ambitious you can also script “scenarios” or basically games you can play in Rigid Chips. You can also make your own levels. Rigid Chips even has a multi-player mode so you can do battle with tanks, airplanes, hovercrafts, cupcakes, or what ever else you can think of. There are many rigid chips models and resources available online.

Its a really cool program too bad it seems that it ‘went out of style’ . Anyway the developer is no longer developing this program but has created a ‘new’ program called Laputan Blueprints (on the same site as RigidChips) Its very powerful and needs a computer with a good graphics card(Laputan Blueprints that is). Laputan Blueprints has its own built-in visual designer but can be complex to use especially for newbies.

You need the Visual Designer if you are going to make models for RigidChips and if you really want to add functionality to the models or ‘chips’ as they are called you will have to learn scripting, especially Lua.

If you just want to make Lego like buildings and stuff, just look for Lego Digital Designer (http://ldd.lego.com/) Its free and allows you to build almost anything, but does not allow you to add ‘life’ to you creations like RigidChips, although you can build Lego Mindstorms with it.

It seems I came too late to the party and all the good stuff is gone :( , judging by the age of the last post. Some of the links in the article no longer work. RigidChips has similarities to making Lego stuff but its not the same.
