DIY Volume knob built using a tea caddy and tinfoil

Technology

Over at MAKE: Japan, Takumi Funada found this excellent tea caddy variable capacitor (translation), which uses a homemade capacitor to turn a little plastic container into a volume control. Nice hack!

    Matt,
I think you’ll find he is using the variable capacitor to tune the radio, not to change the volume. If you watch carefully you’ll see him turn past the maximum volume of the station and then turn back. That’s the sort of behaviour you’d expect when tuning an AM radio station, not from a volume control.

Doesn’t diminish from the coolness of the hack in any way.

    regards
    Terry
