My dad made one of these once. We had an old aluminum washpan a couple of feet across. he painted it white inside and we’d fill it soapy water. bugs can’t walk on soapy water, but how do you attract the bugs into the water? with a submersed 40-watt bulb, that’s how. I don’t remember the details of how the light lived in the water (inside a jar filled with air, i’m guessing) but once the light was on, bugs kinda forgot about you and went straight for the light.
It was crazy how well it worked.
