Use a size of tubing which is significantly larger than the handle, but not so big it slips. When it shrinks the tube wall gets thicker, making it tougher.
“Plasti dip” is good way to add a rubbery grip, but you have to go buy it, while many of us already have heat shrink and wire. If you want to do a lot of tools at once check it out.
When I was keeping my set of small pliers point down, I couldn’t tell them apart in the tool bag. I pulled off the factory handles, spray painted each set of tool handles a unique color, then used clear heat shrink tubing to case the handles.
