Most motion detectors will be a normally open circuit. But check it out with a multimeter.
Now you can plug in your mouse to your computer and when someone triggers your motion detector you get a mouse click. What can you do with that you might ask? Well I’m using it for a multimedia installation where I trigger some sounds and projections when people get close enough.

Most motion detectors are normaly closed so that if the lines are cut, the alarm is trigged. Though, at the same time, many also have a jumper inside to select between NO and NC.
That is true, but more than that a lot of detectors will have an unknown amount of resistance across their normally closed circuit. So if you jump the wire somewhere before the detector, the alarm still knows that someone is tampering.
