I think if you used single core wire you might not need to add the copper wrapping.
When I made my LED iCube interface I used 16 thin single core wires and it turned out really really stiff – take a look at that here: Stiff single core iCube interface.
So if you used a slitghly thicker wire you might get away with it with 4 of them, just maybe.

I actually built one of these two years ago.. and it was floppy, so I did wrap it with thicker copper wire that I stipped from some romex.
It was good, except for one thing… it was difficult to attach the copper wire to the area by the usb plug, so it would bend at the usb connector.
I would definitely retry it with the stiffer wire.
