The application is the touchlib ‘smoke’ demo. There are a bunch of people out there working on open multitouch libraries now so expect it to get better and better in the coming years. It doesn’t take much to build your own multitouch rig and the nuigroup is even sells kits now. If you’d like to help contact the nuigroup. Definately grab touchlib and start playing!

I saw something similar to this project on the TED DVD (only available through netflix sadly, but worth joining netflix for this alone). The guy’s name is Jeff Han, and there is a demo on the TED site (its also on youtube.)
