Since when is this blog about advertising?

The linked site is a lot of pennies each, especially if you don’t want 1000 of one kind/color.

I usually buy from ebay. I’ve heard good things about and they’re a lot cheaper than the place you listed.

oracle, they didnt pay me/make/anyone, it’s a good place to get LEDS – thanks for posting other sources, that was kinda the point…

HB Electronic Components ( has pretty good prices for LEDs and assorted other things.

    1. coretj says: is a rip off!

This is from their own site
“Discounts start for orders from $199 in basic prices, for orders less than $199 there is a surcharge. Smaller the order, more the surcharge.”

So basically, Only buy from them if you want to spend $200 or more.

This is good info–keep going and post more sources please. It’s not advertising, it’s sharing resources and recommendations. I’d also like to hear where people get good prices on LED displays as well (bargraphs, 7segs, alphasegs, arrays, etc).

Futurlec has a good price on new 10 segment bargraph LEDs ($0.30 for red, $0.40 for yellow). And $1.90 for 8×8 matrix red/green 2″ displays Their prices on individual LEDs aren’t so great tho — they list qty 1 pricing, but click on their price link and you’ll get bulk pricing breakdown for qty 1, 25, & 100…but even at 100, it’s still not the “best deal” available. Futurlec has some good prices on new components, but takes 3-6 weeks to ship, so be warned.

I’ve gotten some grab bags of random surplus LEDs, but supply is naturally unpredictable. Sometimes surplus prices are great, sometimes, well, they sometimes charge more than new! A few places to look for cheap stuff (not just LEDs)

    Electronics Express
Electronics Goldmine currently has a bag of 200 red 5mm for $5 (these are brighter than regular ones, and can throw a spot on the wall from a couple feet away, but they are not BLINDING)
    American Science Surplus
    All Electronics
    (and of course, eBay)

Anyone else have other favorite internet surplus sources?

Would it be worthwhile to have an aggregated-list / community-link-pool for suppliers and sources, perhaps with recommendations and comments, on the Make site?

I highly recommend the 3rd drawer down in the large storage cabinet up in the comms lab, fourth floor.

Yay for the corporate america maker welfare system

I like I was searching for super bright LEDs and found the brightest ones there.

Also got a great sticker that said…”Robots WILL kill you.”

    1. coretj says:

its 0.60 per LED… nowhere near the best prices.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. (I buy a lot of LEDs– 2700 last month.)

Lars-Phobe has a good idea about a community list of suppliers– it would be a fantastic resource. It would be great to set that up as a Wiki, so that makers could manage the lists and make comments about some of the cool sources out there.

    …I’ve heard good things about…

I purchased a bag of 100 5 mm white LEDs (13000 mcd) for $12 from them. Haven’t used them all so cannot tell you about the failing rate. But shipping was free and prompt (got it in a week) and LEDs were cheap.

Good selection, decent prices, over at Best Hong Kong.
