MrMunki has a good Instructable on making a super-compact 9 volt USB charger, he calls it a YAN9VUSBC (Yet another 9 volt USB charger) and besides its small form factor, the name is why I really like it – Link.

Terribly stupid question, but how does this work in practice? I mean how much power could I actually get into my USB device from a 9v? Does it recharge at the same rate as plugged into my computers USB? I am an idiot, enlighten me. (In small words please).
well USB charges at a current of 500mA maximum, 100mA if it doesn’t have a host controller (such as a computer) to actually realize what it is and increase the current.
100mA is the standard idle charging current, that is 0.1Amps per hour. if you had a 1000mAh (1Ah) it would take 10 hours to charge completely
