Silkscreening makes it possible to print on steel, wood, leather, plastic, fabric—just about anything flat. It is not as complicated as it may seem. In this video I show the process from the graphic design to making the frame and screen to exposing and printing. You do not need a fancy light box or a big sink. I use available light for the exposure and a squirt water bottle to wash the screen. The squirt bottle has the proper pressure to wash out the unexposed emulsion. And all the supplies are affordable!

Tools

  • Squirt bottle
  • Light
  • Squeegee

Materials

  • Printed acetate
  • Screen
  • Wood for frame
  • Emulsion
  • Paint

In each episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday at 2pm PT), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy.
