It was a nice day to be an underdog at the 50th Lancaster Soap Box Derby on Saturday. Caylee Warner, 10, of Berne Union Elementary, proved that as she cruised her way through the preliminary rounds of the event at Derby Downs. “She is just a real competitor,” said Cathy Warner, Caylee’s grandmother. The cars are a wooden and metal creation built for the children by friends or family members and sponsored by local businesses or organizations. “It took us about a month to build her car,” said Casey Warner, Caylee’s dad. “I gave it to her as a Christmas present.” [via] Link.

Wake n’ Bacon is an alarm clock that wakes you up with the smell and sizzle of cooking bacon. Once the alarm goes off, it sends a signal to a small speaker to generate the alarm sound. The signal is re-routed by a microchip that responds by sending a signal to a relay that throws the switch to power a halogen lamp in the “baker module” that slow-cooks the bacon in about 20 minutes. I bet you could find some type of artifical bacon scent to make this a bit safer. Link.
After two weeks of planning, painting, cutting, and slicing, I have completed my idea for the Neuron Drive, the world’s first 80GB canvas. It is a fully functional USB hard-drive. The Neuron Drive contains 2 fans and 1 Maxtor 80GB hard-drive. It is fully functional as a hard-drive and both fans spin. It can be hung on a wall and plugged into a computer – serving as a working hard-drive. The Neuron Drive is oil on canvas and it’s 24×18 inches. Link.
Japanese Sohgo Security says it will have its Guardrobo D1 robot show up for work in one year. The Guardrobo D1 is 1m tall and can move 30cm/s. The security robot is equipped with surveillance cameras and wireless communications. It can be used to remotely patrol buildings on a given path. Sohgo Security tests the robot in a hotel, jewelry store and another location in Tokyo this summer to prepare it for commercial use. [via] Link.
Another project turning boxes in to something else. FedEx Furniture is furniture put together by empty FedEx Boxes, and held together by fedex packaging supplies. All of the furniture seen here is 100% functional. The couch is standing/sleeping approved, I sleep on the bed every night, I eat at the dining table, and I work at the desk almost 20 hours a day. Free bricks on Craigslist + mud + straw + 3 hrs of work = lots of delicious pizzas. Three days ago I got some free bricks on Craigslist here at our new “offices” in Palo Alto, and built a brick oven so we can have totally sweet pizza parties all summer long. I took some pictures – it looks kind of shabby but makes deliciously wonderful pizzas. Adobe mortar used liberally. Link.
