All joking aside, this thing may be the most beautiful piece of kinetic art I have ever seen. It has a Cartesian robot to draw 1s or 0s on the tape as needed, a rolling felt-covered drum for erasing symbols, a camera that can recognize what symbols have already been written, a bank of white LEDs to provide illumination for the camera, and a beautiful custom control panel.

OK, that allusion is a little unfair, since there’s really only, er, augmentation going on here, rather than deliberate handicapping. Anyhoo, waaaaay back in 1997, German artist Hans Hemmert (who since has done some interesting things with balloons) threw a party at which each guest was outfitted with a pair of shoe-stilts chosen to bring his or her height up to 2.0 meters, so that all the guests could interact, literally, on the same level. New Zealand-based Weirdsky Industries offers these unusual three-legged calipers which express the golden ratio (Wikipedia), dividing the distance they span into two sections such that
The golden ratio is ubiquitous in the natural world, and in art and architecture at least since ancient Greece.
The calipers are made from laser-cut stainless steel, hand-assembled using brass rivets, and are produced in three standard sizes, with custom sizes available on request.
