I caught up with Shelly Hatton at Maker Faire Austin, where she was demonstrating antique circular sock knitting machines! She writes, “Circular sock machines have been around since the early 1900’s and were built so sturdily that they still survive and work to this day. The machines were originally advertised as a way for homemakers to make money at home by cranking out socks, but the learning curve was really high. Currently, there are a number of enthusiasts around the globe who help each other figure out how to use these really nifty antique machines.” Shelly got interested in these machines when she heard a friend had knitted a pair of sock in two hours!
Greg Gage from Backyard Brains demonstrates their SpikerBox kit, which lets you experiment with cockroach neurons. Becky and Greg surgically remove a cockroach leg and listen to the neurons firing. Adrianne Wortzel first saw Tickle-Me-Elmo-TMX during her residency in the Artificial Intelligence Lab in Zurich, Switzerland, and noticed something interesting about the robotic toy. It wasn’t long before she amassed an army of them. And what army is complete without synchronized maneuvers…

Harvey Moon’s Drawing Machine is is not just a controllable pen attached suspending it over a page, it’s a tool for making beautiful artwork. Taking its cues from computer data, the Drawing Machine can reproduce any digitized picture or photograph, and the programmer’s touch introduces noise in the system.
