Check out this DIY tablet mod from Chinese modster pandepig (google translation). Tear apart a plain vanilla 12″ laptop and stuff it in a clear polycarbonate laptop cover. Then add a touchscreen, controller, secure everything with some spacers, and you’ve got yourself a pretty decent frankenpad. It’s running Windows 7, but I’m sure you could run just about anything on it.
Jez over at sammynotebook.com is in the midst of cramming a Samsung N110 into a custom bamboo and aluminum case with promising effect. Add a decent screen with capacitive touch and you’d have a decent machine.
