BUST Craftacular at World Maker Faire

I can’t believe it’s this weekend already! Don’t miss the BUST Magazine Craftacular inside World Maker Faire NY: This year for the very first time, on September 25th and 26th, the BUST Magazine Craftacular will be held outdoors at the World’s Fairgrounds in Queens, NY when it joins the World Maker Faire, which is debuting […]

Mark’s sweet workshop

Mark’s sweet workshop

I just love Mark’s awe-inspiring maker lair. The most fun part of the space is how the computer has its monitor on an extending swing-arm so that it can be positioned where it will do the most good- programming microcontrollers over by the electronics bench or swung near the CNC machine that I am working […]

Massive Stargate props auction

Massive Stargate props auction

The news of this impending giant auction of original props and costumes from Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis both thrills and saddens my inner fanboy: Thrills, because the prospect of owning, say, the original “travel” stargate, the “Thor” puppet, Daniel Jackson’s glasses, Teal’c’s forehead tattoo, Ronon Dex’s blaster, a mature larval Goa’uld, Apophis’s “serpent” helmet, a Zero Point Module, the original MALP robot probe, a bucket of Replicator blocks, an Iratus bug, a Jaffa staff weapon, a Zat’nikatel, a ring transporter platform, and/or the original SGC conference room briefing table is pretty awesome (even though all will likely sell for well more than I could afford); and saddens, because it means beyond any doubt that there will be no more SG-1 or SG-Atlantis. And, so far, I have to say, I’m not enjoying the more humorless, post-Battlestar Galactica approach of Stargate Universe quite as much.

The Zambulance

The Zambulance

Sometimes you don’t have the option of calling for an ambulance. That’s when something like the Zambulance comes in. Made by Zambian bicycle manufacturer Zambikes, this modified bike trailer is outfitted with a mattress and a tent-like curtain to offer shelter from the heat and rain. What used to be a 2-3 hour ox cart ride can now be accomplished in as little as 30 minutes.

Impressive and Slightly Scary Coilgun Build

Impressive and Slightly Scary Coilgun Build

No, this is not one of the sci-fi video game replica weapon props I keep posting about–it’s a real, functioning homemade coil-gun by Jason, aka YouTube user Larsplatoon, aka Photobucket and 4hv.org user Saz43, who has been working on it for two years. It’s billed as a “1.25kJ Coilgun,” but I dunno how that figure was computed. If it is muzzle energy then projectiles from this weapon deliver more kinetic energy than a .45 handgun but less than an M16 rifle, which I frankly doubt. But judge for yourself by clicking the embedded player below to be taken directly to the test firings at 2:50, in which various housewares get shattered and punched full of holes. I’m guessing 1.25 kJ is the theoretical maximum energy that can be delivered by the capacitor bank, and that the real muzzle energy is significantly lower.
