I’m a fan of boxes. Containers really, of all sizes, shapes, and material. I save cigar tubes, altoids tins, coffee containers, boxes that gifts or products come in, and more. I even have several Sterilite bins full of other, smaller containers! I sift through them when looking for that just-right project box or a container to put a gift in or decorate for a friend.
But a handmade wooden box is something special.
Diminutive as it is I was pleased to see Reddit user polyfractal’s simple but elegant handmade box above, constructed from curly maple, purpleheart, and malachite. Upon first seeing the completed box I thought it a ‘trick box’ of sorts but it was designed to be much more simple – and special – than that. Here’s a snapshot of the maker’s process:

That’s great! But now what to put in the box? A homemade engagement ring of course, made from excess cuts of the same wood used to fabricate the box.
The ring was a project unto itself, with some interesting tips & tricks employed during its construction. Namely crossing wood grains to provide extra strength and using duct tape to cover clamps to spare them from glue squeezed out during the clamping process.
