ToAuto Unveils Smart Cutting Machine: Industrial Precision, Now on Your Desktop

The new Smart Cutting Machine brings industrial-level control, real-time feedback, and maker-focused engineering to lapidary and metal cutting.

For decades, makers have faced a difficult choice when it comes to precision cutting.

Entry-level desktop saws are accessible, but often require users to compromise on control, visibility and consistency. Industrial machines offer greater capability, but their size, cost and complexity can place them beyond the reach of many home studios and small workshops.

For makers working with rare agate, irreplaceable specimens, or carefully prepared jewelry material, a single inconsistent cut doesn’t just waste time — it wastes material that can’t be replaced. Entry-level saws get you started. Industrial saws demand a workshop remodel. The space between them is where most makers actually work.

Ahead of its public demonstration at Gem Faire Costa Mesa, August 28–30, 2026, ToAuto is introducing a new desktop smart cutting machine platform designed to bring industrial-level control into a desktop environment.

Built for lapidary artists, rockhounds, jewelry makers, metal craftsmen, and creative workshops, the system focuses on one idea: Give makers more control over every cut.

Two Editions for Different Materials

Stone and metal don’t behave the same way at the blade.

The Lapidary Edition is developed for agate, jasper, chalcedony, quartz, opal, turquoise, and mineral specimens, as well as approved glass and ceramic applications when used with appropriate blades and operating methods.

Its design emphasizes stable blade movement, cutting visibility, controlled water flow, and adjustable speed across materials with different hardness and fracture characteristics.

The Metal Edition is intended for copper, brass, aluminum, compatible non-ferrous alloys, and selected low-carbon-steel applications under appropriate blade, speed, and workholding conditions.

Both editions share the same control architecture and structural philosophy, but each is configured around its intended materials. ToAuto is not presenting one universal blade or setting as the answer to every cutting task.

More Control: Dial In Every Cut

At the center of the platform is a 0.4 kW, or approximately 0.5 hp, brushless DC motor, with a maximum speed of 5,000 RPM and rated torque of 1.1 N·m.

A high-precision motor-control system continuously regulates speed and power output, allowing users to adjust the speed flexibly across 0–5,000 RPM.

Standard Mode supports routine cutting with 200RPM increments, while Fine Mode allows adjustment in 50 RPM increments. This gives makers more control when working with brittle stones, thin slabs, glass, ceramics, or small metal components.

The motor system has 0.1 mm motor-control precision. This shouldn’t be confused with a guaranteed finished-part tolerance. Its practical value is more consistent motor and blade movement, helping reduce vibration, blade deviation, edge chipping, and unnecessary material loss.

For someone cutting rare agate, an irreplaceable specimen, or carefully prepared jewelry material, better control can matter more than maximum speed alone.

Cut With Confidence

The separate 4-inch HD LCD controller gives users real-time visibility into machine operation rather than leaving them to rely only on sound or feel.

It displays five categories of operating status and provides visual and multi-level audible warnings for abnormal conditions. The electrical protection system is designed to respond to issues involving load, current, voltage, speed, and temperature.

One-touch pause and resume allows the user to inspect a cut or reposition material. Speed memory retains the previous setting, so the cut can continue without recreating the operating parameters.

At the blade, an adjustable LED-illuminated splash guard improves visibility of the cutting line and material surface. A semi-enclosed blade structure helps reduce unnecessary blade exposure while containing more water and debris.

A dedicated emergency-stop switch provides immediate manual control when needed.

In this system, being smart doesn’t mean the machine thinks for you, it means you think clearer while the machine cuts better.

Why the Controller Is Separate

The controller didn’t start separate. An early prototype put the screen on the machine body — until wet-cutting tests showed exactly where water mist goes. The motor and core electronic components were positioned just beneath the same area.

Then the production design moved the controller away from the primary wet zone.

It connects through USB-C and RS485 instead of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Not because wireless is bad, but because a dropped signal in the middle of a cut is worse than no signal at all.

Built for Real Work

Long-term performance depends on more than the motor.

The platform uses a 4 mm 304 stainless-steel worktable, selected for rigidity, corrosion resistance, and repeated wet-cutting use. The galvanized steel body is finished with a durable powder coating to improve resistance to moisture, abrasion, and workshop wear.

Inside the machine, a compartmentalized layout separates wet and electrical areas while supporting heat management and protecting core components.

These structural choices show the tool is intended for serious hobbyists, jewelry studios, small businesses, makerspaces and educational workshops — not only occasional demonstration cuts.

Easy to Own

Industrial capability should not require makers to rebuild their entire workspace.

The compact desktop structure, low-vibration brushless motor and lower-noise operation help the machine fit more naturally into home studios and shared creative spaces.

Selected splash-exposed components are designed with IP65-rated splash resistance. This doesn’t mean the entire machine is waterproof or suitable for submersion.

An integrated coolant, drainage, and overflow system helps control water, collect debris, and simplify cleanup after cutting. The aim is not to pretend wet cutting is maintenance-free, but to make water and slurry easier to manage.

Tested With the Maker Community

Early machines were evaluated with mineral clubs, creators and workshop users in several U.S. communities.

During an April 26 session at the Minnesota Mineral Club, participants cut agate, jasper, and other stones commonly around Mohs 7–8.

One participant put it simply: “I didn’t expect this quiet from a machine that cuts through Mohs 7 stone.”

Their feedback also prompted further review of front splash containment, effective cutting geometry on the 6-inch model, and long-term replacement-part support.

That process reflects the principle behind the machine:
