The Road to Maker Faire: Raven Hanna

Raven Hanna, here, of Made With Molecules. I’m a scientist-turned-artist and longtime maker involved in a number of creative science communication projects, including molecule-inspired jewelry and the project Science Tarot, which will have its own table next to the Made With Molecules’ table. This will be my second year exhibiting at the Maker Faire, and after my amazing experience last year, I’m so looking forward to it!

The Maker Faire buzz is in the air! Over the last week, a flurry of emails, conversations, and social media postings from the Maker Faire folks and between makers has ignited. OMG, I’m getting so excited. I cannot wait!

My favorite part of Maker Faire is seeing what my maker-friends have been up to and meeting new folks. I also love the feedback from the Maker Faire audience, who are invariably smart, engaged, joyful, and slightly overwhelmed. With just a few days until the Faire begins, I’m overwhelmed myself, with preparations.

It’s always hard to know what to bring, how much to bring, and how to display it all. I decide, re-decide, and re-think. Wednesday, I spent the day multitasking: making jewelry, cards, and magnets. I enjoy all of these tasks, so the day was quite pleasant. Thursday, I turned to the logistics of packing and list-checking. Today will be the fun day of being on-site, setting up, and running around to see as many projects as possible, since breaking away from my table during the Faire is difficult. It’s difficult not because I don’t have awesome friends who canwatch my table, but difficult because I don’t want to miss anything that interesting people have to say about my stuff. I love geeking out over molecule-discussions and idea-exchanges. Saturday and Sunday will be both blissful and exhausting. I’m not exactly sure what to expect, but that is part of the fun! I’m sure I will come home with lots of new ideas.

Editor’s Note: For those of you who can’t be at Maker Faire in person, you can shop for Raven’s amazing molecular creations at her virtual booth in Makers Market.
