Will.i.am, if you didn’t know, is the founder of The Black Eyed Peas, and a noted technophile. He has been behind a number of initiatives to support education for kids, especially his i.am.angel foundation which started the i.am.STEAM program to support science, technology, engineering, arts and math education in under-served primary and middle schools. He also started i.am.scholarship to provide support to innovative students to complete their secondary education.
With all this in mind, it may not be so surprising that he recently made this remark on Facebook:
Every young person is going to be inspired to be a maker from now on. It’s like how everyone used to want to be a musician, an actor, an athlete — but a maker is what people are going to want to be.
We couldn’t agree more.

He does some great stuff for STEM education. It’s great to see someone in pop music stand up as a spokesman for our movement to inspire kids to learn and explore. He puts his money where his mouth is by funding programs and scholarships.
None of that will make up for the horror that is ‘My Humps’.
While I like everything he does non-musically, I have a slight semantic quibble with this statement. Children don’t aspire to be makers- maker is the default mode of childhood. It’s only when their imaginations have been crushed by TV, badly designed toys and materialistic pop culture that they begin to lose their creative spark.
