Welcome back campers! Here we go for the second week of Maker Camp.
This week’s theme is Create the Future and with that in mind today we’ll be talking 3D printing, soldering, and more. Tune in right here on Google+ at 11am PST.
3D printing experts Joe Grand and Anne Kaziunas France will show us how to scan and print physical objects—like your head! You learn how to do it, too, even if you don’t have a 3D printer. Duann Scott from Shapeways, one of the world’s premier service providers, will stop in to talk shop. We’ll also play a classic MAKE video featuring Bre Pettis and Joe Grand. (Bre worked for MAKE once upon a time before he co-founded MakerBot.)
Meanwhile, be sure to check out our lesson in soldering, a essential skill for a wide range of making. Check out the what you need to know here and tune in and watch to learn more.
Here’s to another exciting week of Maker Camp. Be sure to check out the Maker Camp community page on Google+.

Great info today on the livestream!
For those interested:
3D Modeling software:
SolidWorks is probably the best one I’ve ever used but it is quite expensive, students can pick it up for $99.
OpenSCAD is “CAD for programmers” where it’s all parametric formulas and such. FreeCAD is free and open source available for PC and Linux, I think Mac as well. TinkerCAD is a great one as well and has a web interface instead of on PC software.
Cheap 3D Printers (ASSEMBLED):
Printrbot (The Simple is their cheapest one ~$299 but it is UNASSEMBLED).
Solidoodle
Pirate3D Bucaneer is new and just got kickstarted so it may take some time before they take orders
DIY Build at home 3D Printers:
All RepRaps are open source. RepRap Prusa Mendel and MendelMax are the most popular, other great ones are Mendel90 and Huxley. Go to forums.reprap.org for more info.
Printrbot sells unassembled kits as well.
