Young Makers Program for Spring 2011, Bay Area

Maker Media’s Education Director, Michelle Hlubinka, writes:

We’re so pleased to share with you some more details about the new season of the Young Makers Program. For those new to our network: the Young Makers Program is a collaboration between MAKE, The Exploratorium, and Pixar. The purpose of the program is to inspire and develop the next generation of makers, creators, and innovators. We’re creating a community that brings together like-minded young people, adult mentors, and fabrication facilities in order for kids to produce something of their own imagining for Maker Faire on May 21-22, 2011. You can find out more about the program, projects from last year, and how to participate in this year’s program by visiting our website.

We hope that this year we’ll have 15-20 Maker Clubs in the Bay Area. These can be brand new or like-minded clubs you’ve been running for a few years. Each Young Makers Club will be run by YOU: a teacher, parent, educator, or other youth advocate who believes that young people should be Making more! We’re inviting these “Club Managers” to an informational session and season kickoff on Thursday evening, December 2nd, 2010 at the Exploratorium. Sign up for this event at youngmakers.org by November 30th so we can put you on our guest list for the event.

This year’s program includes another series of Open MAKE programs at the Exploratorium designed to help groups and families prepare for Maker Faire (whether or not they are part of the Young Makers program) and special “plussing” feedback sessions just for Young Makers!

If you live and teach outside the region, we welcome any and all efforts to get kids Making, and we’re working on ways to share what we’re doing here in the Bay Area, so let us know of your interest and we’ll add you to a list of Makers Clubs we’ll be adding to the website.
