Although I can’t say I cared much for the recent Indiana Jones movie that sparked their latest vogue, nor for the aura of new-agey-ness that generally surrounds them, there’s no denying that crystal skulls are cool. And Lego is cool. You can probably see where this is heading.

Uppermost is a Todd Kubo’s Crystal Skull, built almost completely from transparent 1×2 plates, and photographed by Flickr user Rakka at Brick Con 2007.

Here’s another crystal skull build, this one showing the elongated cranium and blue interior brain of the “alien” skulls from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was photographed in 2008 at a Lego store in Bellevue, Washington, by Matthew S., aka Flickr user Gadget Virtuoso, and was part of Lego’s in-store promotional campaign for their movie tie-in sets.

Several of these tie-in sets–notably the #7627 Temple of the Crystal Skull playset–included a new crystal skull minifig head.

Finally, although some Lego purists get annoyed by highly specialized elements like the crystal skull, many in the the AFoL community really enjoy the challenge of finding creative uses for them. Here, for instance, is a cool little mecha-dude by Flickr user KryptonHeidt.
